Job title: Director of Studies (Organising Tutor) in Psychology

Hours: Five weighted hours per week

Contract Type: Fixed Term – 3 years (renewable)

Responsible to: The Senior Tutor

Harris Manchester College invites applications for an Organising Tutor in Psychology. The College is dedicated to mature students aged 21 and over. Our students on the Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics (PPL) degree specialise in Experimental Psychology (EP) or Psychology and Philosophy (PP).

The successful candidate will serve as Organising Tutor for our PPL students, coordinating teaching and assessment, monitoring their academic progress, and providing academic and pastoral support. They will contribute to undergraduate admissions and will teach all (or some of) the prelims psychology tutorials. They will work closely with College staff, external tutors and the Department of Psychology.

The role includes:

Providing an average of five weighted hours of teaching (supervising) per week across Oxford’s three eight-week terms, particularly in first-year psychology.

Arranging teaching, reviewing tutor reports, meeting students each term, and coordinating collections and feedback.

Offering academic guidance and pastoral support to students throughout their degree.

Contributing to admissions, including reviewing applications, selecting candidates for interview and leading EP and PP interviews.

Applicants should have broad knowledge of psychology and be able to teach across first-year topics such as developmental, social and cognitive psychology, psychobiology, and sensory processes and perception. We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching and supporting students, communicates well, and can organise teaching effectively. Previous experience of the Oxford tutorial system is not required.

This role may be particularly attractive to a postdoctoral researcher or someone already holding a research or teaching post at Oxford who would welcome the opportunity to take on college responsibilities and work closely with undergraduate students.

Appointment and remuneration:

The College offers a competitive and flexible remuneration package. Depending on the successful candidate’s preference, the appointment may be structured either as a fractional salaried post or through a retainer linked to the number of Harris Manchester students whose studies they oversee, with tutorial teaching and collection marking paid separately at the College’s standard rates. The successful candidate will become a full member of the Senior Common Room and may take meals in College when on duty. A fractional salaried appointment also includes the option to join a contributory pension scheme and annual leave of 30 days plus bank holidays, pro rata, subject to the terms of appointment.

Harris Manchester College

Harris Manchester is a college of the University of Oxford, with a radical tradition which it continues in the present day. Originally founded in 1786 in Manchester as a dissenting academy, it came to Oxford in 1889, and became a college of the University in 1996, changing its name from Manchester College to Harris Manchester College at that time. From the start, the College was distinctive in offering higher education to those who were excluded from the established English universities (at that time restricted to Anglicans) or other dissenting academies (often restricted to members of a particular denomination). Women were admitted from 1876, with the result that it was uniquely coeducational on its arrival in Oxford.

The College continues its tradition of radical inclusion today through a unique mission: it is the only college in the University of Oxford dedicated exclusively to admitting and supporting mature students (aged 21 years or over) at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The College is committed to breaking down the barrier of age in higher education. It provides a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and inclusive ethos, and pursues the highest standard of academic teaching, learning, and research in an environment which is fully supportive of Fellows, staff and students.

There are approximately 250 undergraduate and postgraduate students altogether, studying a wide range of subjects in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering and Medical Sciences.
