The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the heart of historic Portsmouth. We are seeking an Estates Operative (working a late shift from 3pm to 10pm) to join our Estates team with responsibility for supporting day-to-day operations at The Portsmouth Grammar School.
The Role
Working as part of a team, support the successful day-to-day operations of the School including security of the site, support to our busy and varied events programme and the creation of a safe and welcoming environment for our community and for visitors. There is a team of six Estates Operatives, working three shift patterns all year round. Two operatives work 5 days Monday to Friday from 3pm to 10pm. Two operatives work a 4 day early shift Wednesday to Saturday or Sunday to Wednesday from 5.30am to 3.30pm. Two operatives work a 4 day shift Wednesday to Saturday or Sunday to Wednesday from 8am to 6pm. The vacancy we are looking to recruit into is the 5 day late shift working Monday to Friday from 3pm to 10pm (7hrs per day to include a 30 minute unpaid break totalling 32.5hrs per week).
Main Responsibilities
- To provide secure and safe access for pupils, parents, visitors and contractors, challenging any unauthorised personnel
- Direct traffic on our sites and guide visitors who arrive by car to appropriate on-site parking spaces
- Monitor and operate, under guidance, the Fire and Security systems
- As a key holder, be responsible for the locking of school premises (a late shift specific task)
- Set up, clear away, and re-set areas as required for internal and external events
- Arrange and/or carry out the movement of furniture and equipment within the site
- Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of school grounds
- Operate and use machinery, equipment and hazardous substances as required by the role, whilst observing Health and Safety regulations and wearing protective equipment and clothing, as required
- Undertake regular compliance checks of school assets
- Unload and distribute deliveries
- Report site defects, as required
- Attend, and complete online as required, all Safeguarding and essential staff training as required by the school
- Develop positive relationships with lettings users to provide timely assistance
- Conduct regular security checks and patrols, including monitoring pedestrian access and egress points
- To ensure the safeguarding of pupils
The Ideal Candidate
- A good standard of spoken and written English
- Experience working in a customer or service focused environment as part of a team
- Excellent teamworking skills
- Good communication skills
- A good standard of IT literacy and a willingness to use school email system
- Knowledge of Health and Safety and Safeguarding (training will be provided)
- Ability to carry loads in accordance with manual handling regulations
- Ability to direct traffic on site
- Resourcefulness, with the ability to prioritise workload and work flexibly to support the team
- Willingness to undertake all necessary safeguarding and other staff training
- A driving licence is desirable, but not essential, for ease of transport across two sites
