This is a career graded post with the Job Description and salary range above covering Planning Officer through to Senior Planning Officer. Whilst the role is full-time, we will consider applicants looking for compressed work patterns or slightly less than full-time hours. Are you ready to shape places, influence high-quality development, and build a rewarding planning career in one of Devon’s most attractive districts? We are looking for an enthusiastic Planning Officer to join our ambitious Development Management team. You will help deliver well-designed, sustainable development, protect and enhance Teignbridge’s built and natural environment, and play a direct role in making the district an even better place to live, work and visit.

We do things well and keep developing. This is an exciting time to join us. Over the past two years, we have raised our performance, strengthened the way we work and built a confident, high-performing service. We want people who are positive, curious and committed to doing planning well, with strong professional standards, sound judgement and excellent customer service at the heart of everything they do.

You will work as part of a geographical area team, handling a varied caseload depending on your experience. Your work could include pre-application advice, site visits, report writing, making recommendations on your own applications, and representing the Council at appeals and Planning Committee. If you are earlier in your career, we will support you with training, mentoring and practical experience so you can grow with confidence. If you already have experience, we will help you develop further and take on new challenges.

We offer a genuinely flexible working environment, with colleagues spending at least 50% of their week in the office and the remainder working from home if they wish. New starters are office based for the first two months, helping them settle in, build relationships and feel part of the team from day one.

This role could be for you if you have:

  • A degree/diploma in Town and Country Planning or related subject.
  • Recent and relevant skills and knowledge relating to Development Management.
  • Experience within a Local Planning Authority or private sector planning role.
  • Membership of the RTPI.
  • A full driving licence and be able to undertake site visits around the District, as public transport is limited.

You do not need to tick every box. We welcome applications from graduates, early-career planners and candidates who already have planning experience and are ready for their next step.

We can offer:

  • A generous Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Essential Car User allowance and mileage.
  • Hybrid and flexible working, with a balance of office and home working.
  • Paid professional membership fee for RTPI, subject to local terms and conditions.
  • Free car parking (we also have close access to a mainline train station).
  • Generous annual leave and wellbeing package.
  • Heavily discounted membership at Teignbridge District Council Leisure Centres.
  • Real opportunities for career progression, learning and self-development.
  • 24/7 employee discount access and employee assistance support.

We’re better together. Teignbridge is a fantastic part of South Devon, stretching from the edge of Exeter to Dartmoor and the coast. It is a place of growing communities, valued landscapes, busy towns, thriving tourism and real planning challenges, making this a varied, rewarding and meaningful place to work. Serving around 134,800 residents, Teignbridge District Council is a forward-thinking authority focused on long-term outcomes. Our ‘One Teignbridge’ plan sets out how we will work with communities, businesses and partners to build a better future.

We are an equal opportunities employer committed to a diverse and inclusive organisation. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of their age, caring responsibilities, disability, sex, gender reassignment/trans status, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. We also welcome applications from military veterans and their families.
