The Planet Group have recently been engaged by a market leading manufacturer of high-tech sensors supplying the global Aerospace & Defence industries. We are seeking a Contract Software Engineer to join the team on an initial 3-6 month assignment based in Plymouth. We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our collaborative engineering team in a hybrid role based in Plymouth, helping to shape the future of aerospace navigation technologies.

What You Will Do:

  • As a Software Engineer, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, supporting the design, development, integration and verification of embedded software solutions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting requirements analysis activities
  • Translating system requirements into detailed software requirements
  • Developing user stories and use cases
  • Designing embedded software architectures and detailed software designs
  • Producing test specifications and verification procedures
  • Developing embedded software, primarily in C, with some C++ for support systems and tools
  • Verifying software against requirements and design specifications
  • Performing hardware and software integration activities
  • Supporting performance qualification and validation testing
  • Developing software test tools and utilities
  • Working effectively within cross-functional engineering teams

Key Requirements:

  • Degree qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience working across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience developing real-time embedded software applications
  • Strong programming skills in C, with exposure to C++
  • Familiarity with Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
  • Strong team-working capabilities combined with a proactive, self-motivated approach
  • A customer-focused mindset with attention to quality and detail
  • Experience using Visual Studio or similar development environments

While not essential, the following experience would be advantageous:

  • Experience using software modelling and design tools such as Enterprise Architect - Desired
  • Understanding of UML and software design methodologies
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git, SVN or PVCS
  • Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD)
  • Familiarity with Ada programming language and GNAT Pro Studio
  • Experience contributing to project planning, estimation or bid activities
  • Exposure to Python, MATLAB or Simulink
  • Experience working within aerospace, defence or other safety-critical industries
