Organisation position and purpose
This position will support the overarching mission of the Centre for Veterinary Vaccine Innovation and Manufacturing (CVIM), located at The Pirbright Institute. CVIM aims to bridge the gap between early-stage vaccine research and large-scale production, with a particular emphasis on vaccines for livestock and zoonotic diseases. While a new facility is currently under construction, research is already progressing in existing laboratories. These efforts include both in vitro vaccine production and characterisation, as well as in vivo animal studies on selected promising candidates. The role will primarily focus on supporting the delivery of in vivo studies by carrying out a range of essential tasks under the supervision of the Named Veterinary Surgeon at The Pirbright Institute.
Main duties and responsibility
- By working with the NVS, this role will be responsible for ensuring the correct documentation required for undertaking in vivo CVIM studies is complete and in place. Relevant risk assessments (biological), animal study compliance documents, and compilation and maintenance of study records Management and processing of samples generated from in vivo CVIM studies is required. This will include working at both low containment, high containment, and clean room areas.
- Undertake internal communication with Science, Animal Services (esp. NVS) and site-support teams for example grants/Finance, to ensure all relevant stakeholders are consulted for each in vivo study.
- Be the point of contact for external stakeholder communications like suppliers, contract research organisations and collaborators, in the context of the in vivo study logistical planning and management.
- Input into resource prioritisation discussions related to the delivery of in vivo work.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant standards to ensure test articles being used in in vivo animal studies have undergone the relevant pre-determined QA and QC testing.
- Being proactive in developing the in vivo testing process pipeline, including assistance with compilation of relevant documentation, attending pre- and post-study meetings, and engaging in a continual improvement approach to the way these studies are conducted as the facility develops.
Specific requirements
Essential
- A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant branch of biosciences.
- Experience working with animals in research, particularly in the field of infectious disease and / or vaccine research.
- Experience working in a quality driven environment.
- Experience of working in a laboratory environment, particularly in a pharmaceutical environment.
Desirable
- Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
- Evidence of networking skills with the ability to build effective collaborative relationships with people at many levels.
- Evidence of excellent planning and multi-tasking skills.
