The Phage

The Ellison Institute of Technology is inviting applications for a Scientist (all levels) in Advanced Genome Technologies to join its Plant Biology Institute in Oxford, UK.

The successful candidate will contribute to research in plant biotechnology, focusing on developing advanced methods for genome engineering, plant transformation, genetic manipulation, and DNA/RNA delivery.

This position offers an opportunity to work on innovative research projects, develop new technologies, contribute to scientific publications, and help translate discoveries into commercially viable solutions.

The Plant Biology Institute at EIT Oxford, led by Professor Steve Kelly, focuses on developing innovative and commercially sustainable solutions to improve global food production and environmental health.

Under this project, the researchers work with advanced laboratory facilities and collaborate with experts in artificial intelligence, automation, and synthetic biology to accelerate scientific discoveries and their practical applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and analyse experiments to support research in advanced genome technologies.
  • Develop innovative approaches to plant genetic manipulation, regeneration, and DNA/RNA delivery.
  • Achieve research objectives through structured, stage-gated milestones.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to incorporate emerging technologies into research projects.
  • Present research findings at internal seminars, scientific meetings, and conferences.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, intellectual property development, and patent applications.
  • Support the mentoring and development of other research team members.
  • Work with specialists in artificial intelligence, automation, and generative biology.
  • Identify opportunities to translate research findings into commercial applications.
  • Maintain high standards of research ethics, scientific integrity, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of molecular biology, cellular biology, and synthetic biology.
  • Understanding of the biochemical and physical principles underlying molecular interactions.
  • Significant experience in plant molecular biology or plant-microbe interactions is preferred, although candidates with other relevant research backgrounds will also be considered.
  • Strong experimental design, data analysis, and scientific interpretation skills.
  • Ability to develop and test innovative research hypotheses.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the flexibility to adapt research strategies when experiments do not produce the expected results.
