The Bedford Free Public Library seeks a Maintenance Supervisor to oversee custodial operations. This is a working supervisor position that includes performing routine and deep cleaning tasks alongside custodial staff, in addition to directing and coordinating their work. The role requires independent judgment, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for staff and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise custodial staff and ensure coverage for all assigned shifts
  • Actively perform custodial duties, including cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining public and staff areas, especially during staff shortages or high-demand periods
  • Inspect library facilities daily to confirm cleanliness, safety, and readiness prior to opening
  • Monitor mechanical systems and report or address maintenance issues
  • Manage custodial schedules and calendars; coordinate staffing around library events and meetings
  • Verify employee time sheets for payroll accuracy
  • Monitor inventory of janitorial and maintenance supplies and coordinate purchasing with the Executive Assistant
  • Maintain responsibility for the Bedford Flag, including frequently checking humidity and temperature levels in the flag case and room
  • Perform minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical repairs as needed
  • Ensure walkways, entrances, and grounds are clean, salted, and shoveled as required
  • Operate custodial equipment, hand and power tools, and light vehicles safely
  • Perform preventive maintenance on buildings, grounds, and equipment
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned or required by operational needs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of custodial materials, maintenance techniques, and building care
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with library staff
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond to frequent interruptions
  • Skill in the safe and proper use of tools, equipment, and cleaning materials

Minimum Qualifications

  • Seven to ten (7–10) years of related maintenance or custodial experience
  • At least three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking, standing, reaching, stooping, and climbing stairs or ladders
  • Ability to lift, move, push, or pull furniture, tools, and supplies weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Physical agility to access all areas of the building and grounds
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle
  • Vision abilities including close and distance vision, color differentiation, and focus adjustment

Schedule: 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, 7am – 3pm

Salary: starting at $68,160.45. The Town of Bedford offers a comprehensive town benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement plans and mandatory participation in Middlesex County Retirement System.
