Financial Controller

Full-Time Remote
T

At The Pet Vet, we’re passionate about providing high-quality veterinary care and creating an environment where our colleagues can thrive. As our independent, family-owned business continues to grow, we’re looking for a commercially minded Financial Controller to join our Central Support Team.

You’ll lead our day-to-day financial management, ensuring that month-end, management accounts, cash, payroll and financial controls are delivered accurately and on time. Alongside this, you’ll help us grow the value of the business: identifying opportunities to improve profitability and cash flow, developing business cases for new surgeries and using scenario planning to inform decisions.

Reporting to our Fractional Finance Director and CEO, you’ll have the opportunity to influence how our finance function develops, with potential to progress to Finance Director as the business scales.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading and developing our Finance Assistant, Assistant Management Accountant and Payroll Administrator.
  • Overseeing month-end, management accounts, payroll, transactional accounting and reconciliations.
  • Providing clear financial reporting and practical recommendations that help colleagues understand performance and take action.
  • Managing cash forecasting, payments and covenant reporting.
  • Strengthening financial governance, systems, processes and controls.
  • Working with the leadership team on budgets, forecasts, investment decisions and new-surgery business cases.
  • Coordinating statutory accounts and the year-end audit with external advisers.
  • Delivering finance projects and driving continuous improvement across the business.

About you

You’ll be a qualified accountant with a strategic, commercial outlook and the willingness to roll up your sleeves. You’ll enjoy taking ownership, improving how things work and turning financial information into meaningful business decisions.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualification.
  • More than four years’ experience as a Finance Manager, or two to three years’ experience as a Financial Controller.
  • Service-sector experience and a strong understanding of transactional accounting and payroll systems.
  • Excellent Excel and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear recommendations for non-financial colleagues.
  • Experience producing management accounts and insightful commentary.
  • A track record of establishing financial processes and delivering change.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building and influencing skills.
  • The ambition and capability to develop towards Finance Director as we grow.

Experience with Cezanne, Xero and Lightyear would be an advantage.

Just as important is how you work with people. You’ll be approachable, down to earth and supportive, while confident enough to challenge constructively. You’ll stay calm under pressure, manage competing priorities and follow through on your commitments.

What we offer

  • £55,000–£70,000 salary, depending on experience.
  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Hybrid working, with at least two days each week at our Rotherham Central Services Unit and a minimum of one day per month working from our surgeries. The remainder of the week can be worked from home.
  • Overnight accommodation where necessary for surgery visits.
  • Close collaboration with our Fractional Finance Director, CEO and wider leadership team.
  • The opportunity to shape a growing finance function, with potential progression to Finance Director as the business scales.
