JOB SUMMARY:

Traffic Maintenance Workers in the Merit System support public safety by installing, maintaining, and removing traffic signs, street markings, and signals in compliance with MUTCD standards. Duties include preparing work trucks, using power tools and equipment for on-site tasks, applying road surface markings, and handling materials. Work is performed outdoors, assigned by supervisors, and inspected for quality. The role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to roadway safety.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Bessemer $14.80 – $22.96
Birmingham $15.27 – $23.68
Center Point $14.55 – $22.57
Homewood $17.05 – $26.45
Jefferson County $16.63 – $25.80

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver\’s license.

  • Experience working with hand tools (shovels, sledgehammers, screw drivers, or comparable tools).

  • Experience with measurement tools (tape measure, measuring wheel).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Class B CDL.

  • Work experience and/or certification in traffic flagging.

NOTE: The test for Traffic Maintenance Worker is scheduled for 8/26/2025. Participation is mandatory to be considered for the position.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Ensures safety by setting up worksites according to industry standard safety protocols including the use of warning lights, placement of temporary warning signs, barricade and/or cone placement, appropriate vehicle placement, communicating with crew, and the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Conducts cleanup and maintenance activities including cleaning the work truck, maintaining the sign shop, cleaning various pieces of equipment, unloading and storing materials, and reporting damaged items to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are in good working order and ready to be used again.

  • Completes various work orders and tasks related to the installation of traffic control devices using industry-standard appropriate procedures (i.e., MUTCD, State, Local) including taking various measurements, using tools and equipment to prepare worksites, clearing debris, and placing new traffic control devices.

  • Prepares for daily activities by collecting the needed supplies and equipment, loading and inspecting the work truck and/or other vehicles, using various pieces of loading equipment, and driving to the worksite in order to complete projects as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. May involve [CHOOSE APPLICABLE] occasional OR regular lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as near roadways, parks, etc. Work may involve using various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, and power tools such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, power trimmers, etc. May be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic or near animal or wildlife such as snakes, rodents, etc.
