Job Summary

Paralegals provide administrative and paraprofessional support to attorneys in legal proceedings such as litigation and prosecution. Responsibilities include conducting legal research, investigating legal claims, preparing documentation for court cases, and communicating case information to involved parties. This position is primarily office-based, using standard office equipment, and does not involve supervisory duties.

Compensation & Benefits

Birmingham: $42,556 – $65,998

Jefferson County: $46,363 – $71,905

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience drafting legal documents (pleadings, discovery, briefs, research memoranda, motions) using MS Word.
  • Experience researching laws, regulations, ordinances, case law using resources like Westlaw, Lexis, books, internet.
  • Experience managing legal case files, including organizing information, calendaring, and handling extraditions and sentencing worksheets.
  • Experience calendaring legal case dates and deadlines.

Typical Job Duties

  • Research and analyze legal sources to stay current on laws and procedures.
  • Prepare for cases by investigating claims, interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and preparing statements.
  • Organize legal paperwork and maintain documentation for court cases.
  • Coordinate with attorneys, opposing parties, witnesses, city departments, and the public regarding case development and trial proceedings.

Work Environment

Primarily indoor office setting involving standard office equipment.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work with occasional walking, standing, and light lifting up to 25 lbs.
