Our client, a well-established and growing food manufacturing business, is seeking an experienced and hands-on Production Assistant Manager to support the day-to-day running of a busy production operation. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated production professional with strong leadership skills and experience within a bakery or food manufacturing environment. This role is ideal for someone looking to take the next step in their production management career within a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Production Assistant Manager will play a key role in ensuring production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. You will be responsible for leading and developing a production team, supporting operational performance, and ensuring customer orders are fulfilled on time and in full. This role operates on a rotating shift pattern, working 5 days from 7, including weekend working where required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the smooth running of daily production operations to ensure customer orders are completed on time and to specification.
  • Lead, motivate, and develop a production team to achieve operational and quality targets.
  • Monitor production performance and ensure production plans are delivered effectively.
  • Allocate labour resources and manage staffing levels to support operational requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, quality, hygiene, and health & safety standards.
  • Deliver shift briefings and communicate key operational updates to the team.
  • Support training and development activities, including inductions and skills development.
  • Monitor KPIs and production performance, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support absence management, performance management, and employee development activities.
  • Assist with equipment maintenance reporting and ensure operational issues are escalated appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate production records and support reporting activities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and waste reduction.
  • Provide management cover in the absence of the Production Manager.

Personal Profile

  • Previous experience within a bakery, bread production, or food manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supervising, leading, or managing production teams within a fast-paced operation.
  • Strong people management skills with the ability to motivate and develop teams.
  • Good understanding of food safety, quality, hygiene, and health & safety standards.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a production environment.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including weekends and bank holidays where required.
  • Hands-on management style with a proactive and positive attitude.
