The Company
Our client is a well-established and growing food business supplying a diverse range of products to customers across the UK. With operations spanning retail, wholesale, distribution, production and warehousing, the business is committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety, compliance and consumer protection. As part of its continued growth, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Food Safety Officer to join the team and lead food safety compliance across the organisation.
The Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Food Safety Officer will be the organisation's lead food safety professional, responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining robust food safety systems across multiple operational areas.
This is a strategic and hands‑on role that will see you acting as the competent person for food safety, providing expert guidance to senior leadership whilst ensuring compliance across retail, warehousing, production, packing, chilled and frozen operations.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing the Food Safety Management System
- Developing, reviewing and maintaining HACCP plans and risk assessments
- Ensuring full compliance with UK food safety legislation, allergen management, food labelling and traceability requirements
- Conducting internal audits, inspections and compliance reviews
- Managing food safety incidents, investigations and corrective actions
- Acting as the key point of contact for Environmental Health Officers and regulatory bodies
- Supporting and delivering food safety training across the business
- Driving a positive food safety culture and continuous improvement initiatives
- Providing regular food safety reporting and assurance to senior leadership
The Person
We are looking for a confident and proactive food safety professional with a strong understanding of food safety legislation and compliance within a food manufacturing, retail, distribution or foodservice environment.
To be successful, you will have:
- A recognised level 4 Food Safety qualification or relevant degree
- Proven experience in a Food Safety, Technical or Compliance role within the food industry
- Strong working knowledge of UK food safety legislation and regulatory requirements
- Experience developing and managing HACCP-based systems
- Experience liaising directly with Environmental Health Officers and external regulators
- Internal or external auditing experience
- A sound understanding of allergen management and food labelling compliance
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Comfortable operating in a hands‑on, site‑based environment with regular travel
