We are currently assisting a Local Authority in the recruitment of an experienced SEN Lawyer to join its in-house legal team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a specialist and highly rewarding caseload, supporting education services on a wide range of Special Educational Needs matters. The role offers flexible remote working arrangements and the chance to join a friendly and collaborative team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and representation in relation to SEN and education law matters, including:
- Managing a caseload of SEN Tribunal matters from instruction through to resolution
- Advising education officers and senior stakeholders on SEN legislation and statutory duties
- Preparing responses, witness statements and legal documentation for Tribunal proceedings
- Conducting advocacy at SEND Tribunal hearings where appropriate, or instructing external counsel
- Advising on Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
- Supporting the Authority on school admission, exclusion and education-related judicial review matters where required
- Providing practical and commercially aware legal advice within statutory timescales
- Assisting with policy development and ensuring legal compliance across education services
About You
- Applications are invited from qualified Solicitors, Barristers or Chartered Legal Executives with experience in education and SEN law.
- Candidates should demonstrate:
- Experience handling SEN Tribunal matters
- Strong knowledge of education law and SEND legislation
- Excellent drafting and advocacy skills
- The ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines
- Strong communication skills and confidence advising non-legal stakeholders
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach
- Previous Local Authority experience is advantageous, though candidates from private practice with relevant expertise are encouraged to apply.
