Field Service Engineer | M4 Corridor / South Central UK | £37,500 + Overtime + Bonus | Permanent

If you are the sort of person who can't leave something broken without wanting to know why, this could be a really interesting next step.

We are recruiting for a well-established engineering business looking to add a Field Service Engineer to its highly experienced UK service team.

You will be supporting customers across the South Central region, ideally based around Reading and the surrounding M4 corridor, working on electro-mechanical equipment used within busy production environments.

What matters most from an experience perspective is that you are technically curious, practical, comfortable fault finding and genuinely enjoy dealing with customers.

This could suit an experienced Field Service Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Service Technician or somebody from a production environment who regularly gets hands‑on with machinery and enjoys solving problems.

We will also consider those leaving the Armed Forces with engineering experience.

If you are also the person who spends weekends fixing cars, rebuilding things, tinkering with electronics or generally taking things apart to work out how they function, even better.

What you will be doing

  • Carrying out service, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on customer sites
  • Responding to breakdowns and getting equipment back up and running as efficiently as possible
  • Fault finding across electro‑mechanical equipment down to board level
  • Using tools such as multimeters as part of the diagnostic process
  • Completing planned servicing and preventative maintenance
  • Building strong relationships with customers and keeping them informed throughout a repair
  • Taking ownership of issues through to resolution
  • Working closely with a highly experienced team of engineers who regularly share knowledge and support each other
  • Identifying potential opportunities for additional equipment or services whilst on customer sites
  • Travelling throughout the South Central region (Reading/Swindon/Oxford area), with occasional planned overnight stays

What we need from you

We are deliberately keeping the background fairly open.

You could already be working in field service, maintenance, manufacturing, printing, packaging, aerospace, automotive or another technical environment.

What matters is your approach.

You will need

  • A practical electro‑mechanical engineering background
  • Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving ability
  • Confidence using basic hand tools and diagnostic equipment
  • A full UK driving licence
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to deal directly with customers
  • The ability to work independently while knowing when to ask for support
  • A proactive attitude and genuine willingness to learn
  • Flexibility around customer requirements and travel

We are far more interested in somebody who thinks logically, enjoys understanding why something has failed and wants to develop.

What can you expect in return

This is not a business looking for somebody to simply turn up, fix a machine and go home. They want people to build a long‑term career.

You will be joining a close‑knit service team with engineers who have built up decades of experience within the business and genuinely support each other.

You will receive structured product training and hands‑on development, with clear opportunities to progress in the business in the future.

There is also scope to move into other technical areas of the business as your career develops.

  • Alongside the
  • £37,500 basic salary , you'll have the opportunity to increase your earnings through:
  • Overtime
  • Company bonus
  • Commission on successful lead generation
  • Company vehicle with personal use
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Health cash plan
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Life Assurance Scheme
  • Other flexible benefits

The standard working week is Monday to Friday, approximately 7:30am to 4:00pm, although some flexibility is needed around customer requirements.

If you are technically minded, good with people and enjoy being trusted to solve problems rather than simply replace parts, we'd be keen to speak with you.
