Contract: Permanent

Location: The Old Vic, 103 The Cut, London, SE1 8NB

Hours: Part-Time, 32 hours per week. Working on a shift pattern to be determined but within the hours of 08:00–22:00, Monday to Sunday. Additional hours may be necessary to fulfil the requirements of the post.

Salary: £28,808 pro rata per annum

Benefits: Enhanced annual leave starting at 25 days per year, increasing by one day per year up to 30 days (plus bank holidays). Opportunity to switch statutory bank holidays to mark a religious event or festival. Role Summary

The Theatre Operations Team are collectively responsible for the smooth running of the building day-to-day. The Building Facilities Assistant will provide practical support in maintaining and upkeep of the historic Grade II listed building. They will act as a first point of contact for any on-the-ground issues or queries related to the building and maintenance.

Your Team

Operations Director, Head of Building Operations, Building Facilities Manager, Building Facilities Technicians, Head of Front of House Operations, Operations Administration Manager, Operations Administration Coordinator, Front of House Operations Coordinator, Bar Operations Manager and Health, Safety & Compliance Manager. The role will also work closely with The Old Vic’s Hard FM external contractor who are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Theatre’s Hard FM infrastructure.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Undertaking a range of maintenance and fabric tasks to aid the upkeep of the building.
  • Carrying out routine monitoring of building systems and equipment, including the BMS system.
  • Under supervision of the Building Facilities Manager, practical maintenance and upkeep of the auditorium space, including auditorium seat repairs and numbering, and changeovers as required.
  • Taking responsibility as a Fire Marshall during evacuations and performing evacuation duties where required.
  • Monitoring and responding to Radio requests for Building and Facilities tasks.
  • Supervising external maintenance contractors on site, providing site inductions, and ensuring adherence to safe working policies.
  • Receiving deliveries and assisting with moving equipment and assets around the premises.
  • Preparing spaces, equipment, furniture, and room layouts for use.
  • Carrying out and logging specified building, H&S, environmental, and accessibility checks.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of safe working practices and adhering to them.
  • Providing cover for the Building Facilities Manager as required.
  • Assisting in preparing method statements and risk assessments for in-house works and ensuring reviews when required.
  • Assisting with COSHH records and ensuring they are kept up to date and reviewed regularly.
  • Assisting with fire, health & safety training for staff and contractors as requested.
  • Carrying out reactive requests related to Building and Facilities.
  • Operating the Building Management System as required (training will be provided).
  • Assisting with longer-term objectives to reduce energy and carbon emissions by identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Undertaking scheduled preventative maintenance and checks.
  • Acting as First Aider and attending refresher training as required.
  • Acting as a keyholder and Out of Hours Emergency Contact, responding as required.
  • Working with The Old Vic’s third-party Facilities Management company.
  • Carrying out and logging safety, environmental, and accessibility checks as needed.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current safe working practices and adhering to them.

Person Specification – Essential

  • Experience in a similar maintenance or technician role, preferably within facilities or building operations.
  • Basic understanding of UK building regulations and health and safety requirements.
  • Technical qualifications or certifications are a plus, such as City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 in plumbing, electrical systems, or building services.
  • Previous experience of working within a public-facing premises.
  • Ability to work as part of a small team and autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrable experience completing building maintenance tasks and using power and hand tools safely.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, set priorities, and manage competing demands.
  • A proactive, solution-focused mindset with strong interpersonal skills across departments.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and IT literacy with Microsoft Office; training on software available as required.
  • Aware of environmental sustainability principles.
