About the Team

Join the Log and Learn team and play a pivotal role in helping the NMC become a stronger, safer and continuously improving organisation. We're a small, ambitious and highly collaborative team with a big organisational impact. Our purpose is to identify opportunities for learning across the NMC, ensuring that when things don't go as planned, we take the time to understand why, learn from the experience and implement meaningful improvements to prevent reoccurrences. As a relatively new function, the Log and Learn team sits at the centre of organisational learning, working with colleagues across every directorate to investigate events, uncover root causes and translate insights into tangible actions. Our work helps shape policies, strengthen processes, improve decision-making and embed a culture of openness, curiosity and continuous improvement. This is a unique opportunity to join a growing team that is helping to influence how the organisation learns and evolves. You'll work alongside experienced colleagues who are passionate about quality, learning and improvement, while building relationships with stakeholders across the NMC and making a visible impact on how we operate.

Your Role and Impact

As a Log and Learn Officer, you'll play a key role in helping the NMC learn from events, strengthen processes and drive continuous improvement across the organisation. You'll work closely with colleagues from across the NMC, leading investigations into organisational learning events and building a clear understanding of what happened, why it happened and what can be done differently in the future. Through effective stakeholder engagement, robust analysis and high-quality reporting, you'll help ensure learning is translated into meaningful action that improves services, systems and ways of working. In this role, you will:

  • Lead and coordinate investigations into learning events, gathering evidence and building a comprehensive understanding of what happened.
  • Conduct root cause analysis, identifying the underlying factors that contributed to events and opportunities for improvement.
  • Produce high-quality investigation reports that present findings clearly, objectively and in a way that supports informed decision-making.
  • Engage with a wide range of stakeholders across the organisation, building trusted relationships and encouraging open, constructive dialogue.
  • Develop and agree learning actions that address identified issues and help prevent similar events from occurring in the future.
  • Manage a varied caseload of investigations, ensuring accurate record keeping, robust documentation and delivery within agreed timescales.
  • Monitor and track learning actions, supporting colleagues to implement improvements and embed learning across the organisation.
  • Analyse trends and emerging themes from investigations, helping to identify wider organisational risks, insights and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with specialist teams, including areas such as safeguarding and information security, to ensure investigations benefit from expert input where required.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Log and Learn framework, helping to strengthen organisational learning, improve processes and promote a culture of curiosity, openness and continuous improvement.

This is a role where your work will have a visible impact. Every investigation you lead and every learning action you help deliver will contribute to making the NMC a stronger, more effective organisation that continually learns and improves.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious, organised and motivated by making a tangible difference through learning and continuous improvement. You may already have experience in investigations, governance, quality assurance, healthcare, regulation, complaints, risk, policing, legal services or another environment where you've gathered evidence, analysed complex information and worked with stakeholders to drive positive change. Whatever your background, you'll enjoy asking the right questions, uncovering root causes and turning insight into meaningful action. You'll also bring:

  • Strong report-writing skills, with the ability to present findings, evidence and learning actions in a clear, concise and balanced way.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify root causes, trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships and engage with stakeholders at all levels, influencing outcomes through collaboration and constructive challenge.
  • A naturally inquisitive mindset, with the confidence to explore issues in depth and seek a full understanding of events and outcomes.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a varied caseload, maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.
  • An objective, impartial and evidence-based approach when assessing information and reaching conclusions.
  • Experience using systems and tools such as Excel, SharePoint, Power BI, Power Apps or similar platforms to analyse information and support reporting.

Most importantly, you'll bring energy, professionalism and a genuine commitment to helping the NMC learn from experience, improve the way we work and deliver better outcomes for the public, our colleagues and the professionals we regulate. We welcome applications from people with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.
