About the team and what we do
We are currently offering this role on a 12 month contract. The Case Presentation and Preparation (CPP) team plays a vital role in protecting the public and maintaining confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. We support the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Fitness to Practise (FtP) process by preparing cases for hearings, presenting evidence and ensuring that decision-makers have the information they need to make fair and proportionate decisions. Our work is varied, fast-paced and meaningful. We collaborate closely with investigators, lawyers, case presenters and external stakeholders to progress cases efficiently while ensuring witnesses are supported throughout the process.
Your role and impact
This is an excellent opportunity for a law graduate or early-career legal professional looking to build their expertise in regulatory law, investigations and litigation support within a purpose-driven organisation. As a CPP Paralegal, you'll manage your own caseload of Fitness to Practise cases requiring further investigation, helping to ensure cases are thoroughly prepared and ready for hearing. You'll gather and analyse evidence, draft witness statements and legal documentation, and work closely with Case Presenters and Lawyers to support effective case preparation. You’ll also play a key role in preparing High Court Interim Order extension applications, liaising with colleagues across the organisation, drafting chronologies and witness statements, and ensuring applications are filed within statutory timescales. Your work will directly contribute to public protection by helping ensure that concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates are investigated fairly, efficiently and robustly.
In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

What you’ll bring
- A Law degree (LLB) or equivalent legal qualification.
- Experience of managing a caseload independently within a legal, regulatory, investigative or case-handling environment.
- Experience of gathering, reviewing and analysing evidence, including preparing witness statements, case documents or other formal legal or regulatory documentation.
- Experience of working collaboratively within a team while managing competing priorities and delivering work to deadlines.
- Strong legal research, analytical and drafting skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate and persuasive written documents.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and confidence with witnesses and stakeholders.
- Strong organisational and IT skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate records.
- Sound judgement and critical thinking, enabling you to analyse evidence, assess risk and reach balanced, reasoned conclusions.

Hybrid Working Policy
We are currently working to a policy of office attendance for two days per week with the rest of the time working from home. Before submitting your application, please ensure you are able to commit to working in one of our office locations twice per week. If you are applying for a part-time role, please pro-rata office attendance based on the number of days you would be working.
Our Pay Policy
It is expected that staff new to the NMC will ordinarily be appointed to the bottom of the relevant pay band. However in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a salary above the bottom of the relevant pay band but we may request proof of current earnings. Please note that we offer an annual review of salaries and adopt a generous progressive pay approach. Further details of which are available on request. For our internal colleagues, you will be paid in accordance with our internal pay policy.
