About the Role
Contract type: Permanent. Hours: Full‑time, 35 hours. Location: Head Office, Nottingham (Hybrid working, minimum 2 days per week). We are an ambitious building society using technology to support secure, resilient and reliable services for our members and colleagues. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Linux / infrastructure engineer who enjoys improving systems, solving problems and helping make technical environments more secure, current and supportable. You’ll join a warm and collaborative team supporting the Society’s infrastructure and wider technology estate. This is a broad Systems Engineer role first, with additional depth in Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux operations. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is our standard platform, so strong RHEL administration experience is important from day one. The role will also support Linux patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, operating‑system hardening, lifecycle management, documentation, tooling and operational improvement. We’re looking for someone proactive and practical. This is not a role for someone who only waits for tasks to be handed to them. We want someone who can analyse the Linux estate, identify risks and improvement opportunities, explain the options clearly, and help deliver safe, controlled and well‑documented improvements. All roles are hybrid based in Nottingham and include participation in an out‑of‑hours rota.
Responsibilities
- Linux Infrastructure Support – Support, maintain and continuously improve Linux, Red Hat and wider infrastructure services across the Technology Operations estate.
- Technical Support & Service Delivery – Provide 2nd and 3rd line support for incidents, problems, service requests, changes and project activity.
- Security & Vulnerability Management – Deliver Linux patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration and operating‑system hardening activities.
- Linux Platform Optimisation – Enhance the use of Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Insights and Ansible to improve operational efficiency and platform management.
- Risk & Lifecycle Management – Analyse the Linux estate to identify lifecycle, supportability, tooling, configuration and operational risks, recommending improvements where required.
- Change & Maintenance Delivery – Plan, implement, test and validate Linux patching, remediation and maintenance activities within a controlled environment.
- Access Control & Governance – Manage and review Linux access and privilege models, including sudo/root access, SSH access, SSH keys, local accounts and service accounts.
- Documentation, Knowledge Sharing & Operational Resilience – Maintain technical documentation and runbooks, share knowledge across the team and participate in the out‑of‑hours support rota.
Qualifications
- Linux Infrastructure Expertise – Strong experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments, supporting enterprise infrastructure and maintaining secure, resilient services.
- Security & Risk Management – Good understanding of Linux patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, operating‑system hardening and identifying operational or lifecycle risks.
- Technical Problem Solving – Able to analyse complex technical environments, troubleshoot issues effectively and recommend practical, supportable solutions.
- Change & Service Delivery – Experience working within controlled change environments, including planning, testing, implementation, validation and rollback activities.
- Access & Privilege Management – Strong understanding of Linux access controls, including sudo, root access, SSH, local accounts, service accounts and privilege management.
- Automation & Continuous Improvement – Experience or interest in automation and tooling, with exposure to technologies such as Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Insights, Ansible, scripting or infrastructure automation.
- Communication & Knowledge Sharing – Able to create clear technical documentation, maintain operational runbooks and share knowledge effectively across technical teams.
- Broader Technical Awareness – Exposure to VMware, cloud technologies, Terraform, GitHub, networking or Linux lifecycle management, supported by relevant technical certifications or equivalent practical experience.
Benefits
- Competitive Package – Fair salary benchmarked against market data, annual discretionary bonus, and 29 days holiday plus bank holidays.
- Health & Wellbeing – Access to Medicash, mental health first aiders, and a suite of wellbeing resources to support you inside and outside of work.
- Work‑Life Balance – 35‑hour working week for full‑time roles, with flexibility to help you perform at your best.
- Career Growth – Ongoing personal and professional development, we’ll support your ambitions and help you grow your potential.
- Inclusive Culture – Be part of a friendly, values‑led team that genuinely cares about doing the right thing for colleagues and customers.
