This Interim Chief Accountant role offers you the chance to lead a specialist team, shape financial compliance, and deliver high-impact reporting – all while enjoying a hybrid set-up with just one day a week in Southampton. With a strong hourly rate and a clear, fixed-term brief, you’ll be able to make your mark and see the results of your expertise in real time.
This role is offered on a temporary basis, for around 4 months.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will be responsible for:
- Managing and delivering a high-quality technical accounting service, including VAT and tax
- Leading a technical accounting team to ensure compliance with accounting standards, CIPFA guidance, and government regulations
- Providing clear, insightful reporting on treasury management, capital strategy, and funding requirements
- Supporting cabinet members and governance boards on technical accounting matters
- Liaising with external auditors and other agencies to ensure best practice
- Driving continuous improvement and maintaining robust records and reporting standards
- Escalating risks and ensuring all activities comply with policies, including Health & Safety and Information Governance
What you will need:
- Previous experience in a senior technical accounting role (such as Chief Accountant, Technical Accountant or Head of Technical Accounting) within a large or complex organisation
- Strong knowledge of accounting standards, CIPFA guidance, and public sector finance
- Proven ability to lead and develop specialist teams
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to support senior stakeholders and governance boards
- A track record of delivering process improvements and maintaining high compliance standards
