The role will be a full time 10 PA post on Assessment Suite and the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary as an Acute and General Medicine Consultant.
The successful applicant will join a team providing care to medical patients during their admission and managing others as out-patients through SDEC. The applicant will need to be to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They will be part of an on-call team in order to provide care for our patients across a 7-day service. There will also be an opportunity to practice sub-specialty interest within the job plan. In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
This successful candidate will join the current Acute Medicine consultant team in the day to day running of a short stay/general medicine ward along with some time on Assessment Suite and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). This will involve providing senior clinical decision-making early in patient pathways and supporting junior clinicians both in the acute setting and on a general medical ward. The role also involves supporting educational activities for the undergraduate and postgraduate trainees within the acute medicine department.
Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts every day, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:
• Freeman Hospital
• Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
• Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)
• Newcastle Dental Hospital
• Newcastle Fertility Centre
• Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
• Northern Genetics Service
• Cramlington Manor Walks

Clinical:
· Clinical shifts will be split between Assessment Suite (a 50 bed acute medical admissions area) and Same Day Emergency Care (dedicated area proving same day care to around 60 patients a day).
· Morning shifts entail a ward round on Assessment Suite, and afternoon and on-call shifts involve working on Assessment Suite and SDEC with a constant review of new patients as they arrive on AS/SDEC as a senior clinical decision maker.
· Sub-specialty interest work will be supported if practicable by mutual agreement
