The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. The New York Times is looking for an able and creative journalist to join our team in the London news hub as an assigning editor with a regional beat. The London team is responsible for the Times’s expansive coverage of Europe and the Middle East, and we also stand ready to handle anything that happens anywhere in the world while we’re on duty.

In this role, you will help guide coverage on the international desk, overseeing a small team of reporters. You will work closely to help them grow in their beats, develop creative new story ideas, including analytical and explanatory coverage; craft transporting features, profiles and dispatches; and drive breaking news in all its forms. You’ll also collaborate with other editors to help manage the daily news flow and jump into live coverage, as well as to offer your ideas and insight as we look for new ways to cover some of the most important changes happening in the world today.

Our ideal candidate will be an experienced journalist who loves to work with reporters and brings infectious energy to coverage. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to integrity and accuracy, and will have a track record of showing initiative and leadership. We expect flexibility and collegiality in a quickly changing news environment that demands teamwork and a supportive attitude. We hope to find a team member who brings a deep curiosity and enthusiasm as we explore the vast cultural, philosophical and geographic diversity of our coverage areas.

This is an in-office position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. This role will report to the Europe Editor.

Main Responsibilities
  • Overseeing a group of reporters, helping them to grow in their geographic and topical beats and to adapt to evolving practices for executing coverage.
  • Guiding and editing sophisticated news, analytical and feature coverage, including live and visual-first journalism.
  • Developing new story and coverage ideas in a team environment and coordinating coverage that crosses bureaus and lines of expertise.
  • Monitoring the news flow and flagging opportunities for impact journalism.
  • Collaborating with other editors across a variety of disciplines and beats, including photo, graphics and video.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our values of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
