Director required for male barbershop chorus
Sussex Harmonisers
The Sussex Harmonisers, based in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, have been successfully singing A Cappella for over 21 years and are looking to appoint a chorus director for their male chorus Sussex Kings of Harmony.
The post will require regular commitment including:-
- Preparing and leading weekly rehearsals, which take place in Burgess Hill on Tuesdays between 19:30 and 21:50
- Working with our music team and preparing repertoires for live performances (about 2 - 3 hours a month).
- Attending Music Team meetings via Zoom (approx. 1 hour every 6-8 weeks).
- Leading live performances at various venues approximately twice monthly (more in the lead-up to Christmas).
- Liaising with Roger Pinsent, Chorus Director of Sussex A Cappella (our female voice chorus) whenever we have joint events or performances
- Preparing for and attending annual competition (last Bank Holiday weekend in May each year).
- Assisting with recruitment, training and promotional activities.
Attributes & Arrangements
- We sing four-part harmony, predominantly in the Barbershop style. Barbershop experience is preferred but not essential. We welcome applications from experienced choral directors who are interested in learning and developing within the barbershop style.
- Experience of leading a chorus or vocal ensemble is essential (references required).
- Own transport would be helpful (the rehearsal venue is a fifteen-minute walk from Burgess Hill station).
- Remuneration is by negotiation for both fees and reasonable travelling expenses.
Timescale
- September/October 2026 - Applications and expressions of interest.
- Please give a maximum 2 x A4 page CV and short letter or email introducing yourself and giving two appropriate references that we could contact (at least one of whom should be 'musical').
- Closing date for applications: 18.00 on Friday 25th October.
- November 2026: Assessment, review, questions.
- December 2026: Attend rehearsal with Roger Pinsent.
- Appointment provisionally by Friday 18h December.
- December/January: Rehearsals and/or some performances.
