We are looking for an experienced, proactive Estate Horticulturist to join our dedicated Estate and Woodlands Team. You will help deliver our long-term woodland, meadow, and grounds care strategies, blending traditional techniques with modern conservation principles. Your work will span everything from tree management and grassland restoration to habitat creation and visitor engagement.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists with the cultivation, maintenance and conservation of allocated areas, projects and events as instructed, ensuring plants, landscapes and habitats are maintained and developed in accordance with NBGW's values, policies and procedures.
- Undertake arboricultural tasks including tree planting, felling, formative pruning, and pest/disease control.
- Undertake grounds maintenance and mowing formal, natural and semi-natural grassland habitats.
- Assists with the implementation of new planting programs, landscaping schemes, maintenance plans and pest/disease control measures which enrich, maintain and preserve NBGW's living collections and woodlands.
- Assists colleagues in other areas of NBGW, where horticultural skills are required, to support educational programs, events, research projects, displays and exhibitions which enhance visitor enjoyment.
- Assists with the introduction of new apprentices, trainees and volunteers ensuring that basic horticultural tasks and activities are carried out with adequate instruction while satisfying the relevant Health & Safety regulations.
- Assists with the preparation and delivery of horticultural talks and demonstrations to visitors, colleagues, local officials and external bodies as directed.
- Engages and interacts with visitors and colleagues answering questions, providing guidance and imparting knowledge to promote and enhance NBGW’s reputation as a leading botanical attraction.
- Actively promotes the work of horticulture within other areas of the organisation, thereby developing and maintaining the culture of collaboration and co-operation across all departments and functions.
