Supports and conducts fermentation process development utilizing bacteria and fungi as live microbe technologies for agricultural applications. Provide technical expertise to scale bench top processes to production scale, defining quality control specifications to ensure product integrity and efficacy. Partner with key stakeholders at all phases of product development to ensure process quality specifications are met, supporting ongoing projects in the laboratory, field, and/or production locations. Travel to third-party sites to support tech transfer processes and troubleshooting as needed. Fermentation laboratory skills, excellent communication, and strong organizational skills are required.
What will you do:
- Execute targeted studies to advance agricultural product candidates following experimental designs that have proper replication and controls to ensure meaningful and interpretable results. This work may occur in the laboratory, field, and/or at production locations.
- Optimize and scale fermentation processes from bench top to pilot and eventual production scale. Ensure the process is robust, repeatable, and appropriate quality control specifications are defined and documented.
- Responsible for Tech Transfer and troubleshooting of Fermentation processes to other Mosaic sites and third-party organizations. Travel to Mosaic or third-party locations to support these activities as needed.
- Familiarity with upstream and downstream processing methodologies related to Fermentation and Formulation of Agricultural products, such as centrifugation, de-watering, spray drying, etc.
- Application of Cost of Good and Return on Investment methodologies in process definition.
- Identify and onboard third-party fermentation service providers: Develop a long-term strategy for fermentation capacity that aligns to Mosaic Biosciences product launch goals, including internal and external options.
- Identify and manage third-party fermentation providers to ensure adequate capacity is available to support annual project needs.
- Design and build out a Pilot Scale (up to 3000L) Fermentation lab, including forecasting equipment and personnel costs to run and maintain the facility.
- Maintain the laboratory and equipment therein.
- Interpretation of results and data generation using high quality, rigor, integrity, and compliance standards. Summarize, document and present results to project teams and other stakeholders.
- Serve as a Fermentation Subject Matter Expert on project teams, and for the Mosaic community.
- Prepare production process and quality control documentation in support of tech transfer.
- Prepare production process documentation in support of regulatory submissions.
What will you need:
- Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or microbiology required.
- Demonstrated abilities in Fermentation and/or engineering methodologies.
- Experience in biotech and/or agriculture companies (biotechnology, fertilizers, crop protection, seeds, etc.).
- Knowledge of and training in good experimental design and basic statistics.
- 4+ years of related experience in engineering, industrial project experience, or engineering project management.
- 8+ years or more of related experience in engineering, industrial project experience, or engineering project management.
