The post sits across the surgical admissions area and pre-operative assessment clinic at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, open to Nursing Associates and assistant practitioners. It involves assessing suitable patients awaiting elective surgery, covering physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs, and supporting them on the day of surgery. It is a developing role in a small team, with support for band 3 healthcare assistants in the testing clinic. Priority goes to applicants with recognised Priority or At Risk status, including NHS staff across Devon.
What the job involves
- Carry out pre-operative assessment of suitable patients waiting for elective surgery
- Cover the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of patients during assessment
- Support patients on the day of surgery, working with the surgeon and anaesthetist to ensure they are safe and ready for theatre
- Escort patients to the anaesthetic room, ensure correct monitoring is in place and remain present during the anaesthetic
- Advocate for patients and ensure their safety
- Support band 3 healthcare assistants in the testing clinic
- Take an active part in the multidisciplinary team, working under proximal supervision of a registered nurse or practitioner
- Work within your determined scope of practice
- Deliver a high-quality, person-centred, individualised service that complies with legislation and standards
- Work collaboratively with colleagues within and outside the department
- Help create a no-blame culture where feedback and learning are valued
- Build working relationships and trust, and provide support when required
