This Band 5 staff nurse post sits in the Children's Outpatients team at Musgrove Park Hospital, run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The nurse provides family-centred outpatient and ambulatory care to babies, children and young people up to 18 with a wide range of acute and chronic physical and mental health conditions. The role includes hands-on procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation and ECGs, and supporting students and new starters. NMC registration is required.
What the job involves
- Deliver safe, compassionate, patient-centred nursing care to children and young people in outpatient clinics
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients with acute and chronic health conditions
- Carry out clinical procedures including venepuncture, cannulation, ECGs, allergy testing and HbA1c monitoring
- Support children needing ambulatory care, intravenous therapy, immunisations and pre-operative assessment
- Communicate with children, young people, parents and carers at a level suited to each person's understanding
- Advocate for patients and families, promoting dignity, respect and safeguarding
- Keep accurate clinical records in line with NMC and Trust standards
- Take part in service audits, quality improvement and the adoption of best practice
- Support the leadership, supervision, induction and development of students, new starters and junior staff
- Help clinics run smoothly, prioritising patient safety and organisation
- Prepare clinical environments and support efficient clinic running
- Monitor and record clinical observations and respond to changing patient needs
What’s required
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in nursing
Registration & licences
- Active NMC registration as a registered nurse
Experience
- Experience in a relevant clinical setting
- Previous experience supervising junior colleagues or students
