Senior Staff Nurse - ICU

This Senior Staff Nurse post sits in the intensive care unit team at Cleveland Clinic London, a 29-bed, high-acuity unit. The work centres on direct nursing care for level 2 and 3 patients, prioritising care and escalating deterioration, coordinating discharge planning, and leading the unit day to day when the sister or charge nurse is absent. The rota runs across days, nights and weekends on a six-week cycle of 19 shifts. Candidates need current NMC registration with no restrictions and a completed adult critical care course.

What the job involves

• Provide direct nursing care to level 2 and 3 patients under CCL policies and protocols
• Prioritise care, recognise deterioration and elevate immediately to the senior nursing team or clinicians
• Serve as primary coordinator across disciplines and coordinate discharge planning with the healthcare team
• Manage the ICU when on duty and contribute to outreach and resus rotas if required
• Organise the unit day to day in the sister's or charge nurse's absence, allocating staff by competence and reviewing skill mix and workload
• Keep the sister or charge nurse informed of risks, staffing, skills and equipment needs
• Act as clinical leader and role model, sharing expertise with colleagues
• Mentor and supervise pre and post registration staff and demonstrate procedures
• Manage team KPIs on recruitment, retention, staff development, appraisal, sickness, disciplinary and grievance
• Contribute to department teaching and mentorship programmes and liaise with clinical educators
• Lead quality, safety and risk work, including incident reporting, complaints, infection control and core standards
• Communicate with patients and families, document clinical care, and take part in research and evidence-based practice

What’s required

Qualifications

• Nursing Bachelor's Degree
• Completed adult critical care or intensive care course, or equivalent
• ILS/ALS provider course, in date

Registration & licences

• Current NMC registration (first level) with no restrictions to practice

Experience

• Suitable experience as an ICU Senior Staff Nurse
• Clinical experience with high-acuity critically ill adults, including invasive lines, mechanical ventilation, continuous and intermittent haemodialysis, and vasoactive IV medications
• Wide experience across critical care specialties including cardiac, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, renal and GI surgery
• Track record of achieving objectives in clinical and leadership roles
