This fixed-term Research Fellow post sits in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Southampton, on the five-year STFC-funded TRANSCEND project shared with Lancaster and Oxford. The post leads the host-galaxy strand, using LSST and TiDES data to study how transients relate to their environments. It is one of three posts across the collaboration, so the researcher will work closely with the other two and contribute to TiDES infrastructure. A PhD, or near completion, in a physical science field is needed.
What the job involves
- Derive host-galaxy properties from LSST and TiDES photometric and spectroscopic data
- Use the LSST and TiDES transient sample to study how transients correlate with their environments
- Measure transient rates to uncover the physical origins of stellar deaths
- Follow up interesting transients
- Pursue projects that maximise the science from TiDES
- Contribute part of your time to TiDES infrastructure work
- Work closely with the other TRANSCEND postholders through regular collaboration visits
Qualifications
- PhD, or near completion, in astrophysics, physics, cosmology or a related field
Experience
- Research experience in time-domain astrophysics, supernovae, galaxy evolution, cosmology or survey science
Skills & knowledge
- Strong scientific programming skills in Python
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Other
- CV
- Publication list
- Two-page research statement on past research and its relevance to TRANSCEND goals, stating order of preference if applying for more than one post
