This Research Fellow post sits in the Research & Teaching area at the University of Surrey, on an EPSRC-funded project running to March 2029. The work covers antenna synthesis and physical layer radio for a wireless method aimed at delivering gigabit connectivity to train carriages in tunnels. It is full-time and works alongside a second researcher focused on RF and antennas, with a concept demonstrator to build. Candidates need a PhD, or to be close to completing one, in electronic engineering, mathematics or a related field.

What the job involves

  • Conduct research on antenna synthesis and physical layer radio for 3D Angular Momentum Multiplexing in train communications
  • Design and construct a concept demonstrator with the other RF and antennas researcher
  • Run computer-based simulations
  • Carry out library research, critical evaluation and interpretation of results
  • Take responsibility for specific areas of the project
  • Adopt new research techniques and methods
  • Work in consultation with the research award holder or supervisor
  • Assist other researchers with practical measurements

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent), or close to completing one
  • PhD in electronic engineering, mathematics or a related area such as antenna array synthesis or modulation and coding

Skills & knowledge
