This Research Fellow post sits in the Wireless Systems Lab group of the Institute for Communication Systems, which hosts the 5G and 6G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey. The work centres on ultra-low-power analogue and mixed-signal computing for future communication receivers, including designs that cut reliance on high-resolution analogue-to-digital conversion. The role involves close collaboration with industrial partners and academic groups worldwide. Fit depends on hands-on analogue circuit design and circuit-level modelling and simulation experience.

What the job involves

  • Research ultra-low-power analogue and mixed-signal computing architectures for future communication systems, with emphasis on receiver processing
  • Develop architectures that reduce or remove reliance on high-resolution analogue-to-digital conversion
  • Investigate how digitally implemented signal-processing operations can be realised using analogue, mixed-signal and in-memory computing
  • Co-design algorithms and hardware
  • Carry out circuit- and system-level modelling
  • Evaluate architectures for communication performance, power consumption, latency, precision and implementation complexity
  • Set and work towards research targets
  • Disseminate results and document work

Experience

  • Research experience in analogue circuit design for low-power signal processing, computing or communication
  • Experience in circuit-level modelling and simulation, including power and energy consumption and circuit non-idealities

Skills & knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of algorithm–hardware co-design under noise, precision, dynamic-range, variability and implementation constraints
  • Strong analytical and modelling skills
  • Programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python
  • Communicating research findings clearly in writing and orally

Nice to have

  • Experience with in-memory computing architectures, including memristive/ReRAM or other emerging-device technologies
  • Knowledge of signal processing and communication systems, particularly channel estimation, detection, decoding, optimisation or linear algebra
  • Track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications in analogue/mixed-signal circuits, in-memory or neuromorphic computing, signal processing, communications or related areas
