A three-year postdoctoral post in the neurobiology group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, built around mapping the wiring of the hatchling octopus brain. The work uses volume electron microscopy and expansion and light microscopy to trace neural circuits in the optic lobe and central brain, alongside neuropeptide signalling research in C. elegans. It is a training-focused role for recent doctorates or scientists changing discipline. A PhD in a relevant subject, or one due within six months, is needed.

What the job involves

  • Undertake research on neuropeptide signalling pathways in C. elegans and the hatchling octopus brain
  • Use volume electron microscopy and expansion/light microscopy to study neural circuit wiring in the octopus optic lobe and central brain
  • Build expertise in connectomics, neuronal gene expression analysis with fluorescent probes, and network analysis
  • Plan 12-month objectives and manage experimental work with your supervisor, identifying, developing and applying techniques with limited supervision
  • Shape the project's direction within its three-year lifespan, in discussion with the Group Leader
  • Introduce new techniques and develop novel approaches where required
  • Present scientific work at laboratory seminars and external meetings, and contribute to laboratory-wide discussions
  • Draft scientific papers and contribute to preparing research for publication
  • Ensure research follows good practice, local policies and legal requirements
  • Help run the group, including effective use of resources and communal facilities, and train others
  • Assist in training PhD students and other LMB members
  • Contribute to public engagement and to translating research into health care improvements

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant subject, or due to complete within 6 months

Experience

  • Track record of research, including achievements and contributions to published papers
  • Experience working with C. elegans and/or octopus hatchlings

Skills & knowledge

  • Ability to perform techniques relevant to the project
  • Computational skills, particularly genome analysis
  • Analysis of neuronal gene expression using fluorescent markers and light microscopy
  • Expertise in cellular and molecular neuroscience
  • Experience in quantitative analysis of behaviour

Checks & eligibility

  • Security screening or vetting to the level required for the role

Other

  • Evidence of commitment
  • Evidence of originalityAbility to communicate
  • Evidence of working with others

Nice to have

  • Experience of volume EM or expansion microscopy-based connectomics

What’s offered

  • MRC training courses
  • External training and personal development courses
  • One-to-one training with your supervisor and other scientists
  • Tailored development programme to build research and generic skills
