A permanent, continuing post as Section Principal Timpani with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scotland's national broadcasting orchestra. The holder leads the timpani section, shares responsibility with management for players' performance and helps compile the freelance list. The bar is solo and full orchestra repertoire at the highest standard, across broadcast, live concerts and new music. What the job involves
- Lead the timpani section as Section Principal
- Maintain the professional standard of playing and artistic excellence the orchestra requires
- Learn the relevant parts, including solos, before the first rehearsal and performances
- Support the leaders and conductors engaged by the orchestra
- Take responsibility for the style, intonation, balance, ensemble, rhythm and preparation of the section, with leaders and the Chief Conductor
- Lead and manage the section, sharing responsibility with management for players' performance
- Assist and consult on compiling the list of freelance musicians in the section
- Foster an environment in which artistic excellence flourishes
What’s required
Experience
- Extensive experience as Section Principal Timpani, playing solos and full orchestra repertoire to the highest standard
Skills & knowledge
- Effective, committed team leadership, sharing responsibility with management for players' performance
- Strong leadership and some experience of delivering feedback
- Ability to maintain artistic excellence and encourage it in others
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, management and conductors
