Scrub nurse role in the operating theatre team at Optegra's private eye hospital, covering the ophthalmic surgical pathway. The post centres on assisting surgeons with instruments and equipment, keeping decontamination and disposal records, and documenting care. Work spans peri-operative and post-operative care in the surgical and refractive suite, plus some minor operations. Fit depends on current, unrestricted NMC or ODP registration and at least a year in ophthalmic theatre.
What the job involves
- Take part in all aspects of the ophthalmic surgical pathway
- Provide care to all patients
- Give skilled clinical and technical assistance as part of the operating theatre team
- Carry out registered nursing duties: assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care, with support from the practitioner in charge
- Maintain patient privacy and dignity in line with trust and department policies, and report difficulties to senior staff
- Anticipate the surgical team's needs by providing instruments and equipment
- Ensure surgical equipment is disposed of correctly and that decontamination and sterilisation of reusable equipment is carried out and evidenced
- Complete documentation to ensure traceability
- Provide peri-operative and post-operative care in the surgical and refractive suite
- Assist with minor operations
What’s required
Qualifications
- Registered General Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner
- Qualification in ophthalmology or peri-operative care
Registration & licences
- Current NMC or ODP registration with no restrictions
Experience
- One year or more of ophthalmology surgical theatre experience
Skills & knowledge
- Computer and IT skills, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Awareness of responsibilities under the NMC Professional Code of Conduct
- Awareness of CQC standards and requirements
