Two permanent Loader and Waste Operative posts sit within BCP Council's Environment department, on its commercial waste collection service. The work centres on loading large bins from premises onto a trade refuse vehicle and collecting bulky items such as sofas. The role is outdoors in all weathers on a 37-hour rota with early starts, late finishes and some weekends, and no previous experience is needed as LGV training may follow. Visa sponsorship is not offered, so applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
What the job involves
- Load large commercial bins from premises onto a trade refuse or recycling vehicle safely and efficiently, under the driver's direction
- Empty commercial waste containers
- Collect bulky items such as sofas and chairs
- Act as banksman and help the driver manoeuvre the vehicle
- Complete records and paperwork such as timesheets and commercial waste rejection slips
- Deal helpfully and courteously with customers, suggest solutions and promote waste services where appropriate
- Work in a flexible, multi-skilled team, covering other duties such as site security and taking payments for chargeable waste
- Drive non-LGV vehicles such as forklifts and vans when trained
- Learn and maintain knowledge of commercial collection routes and operational services
- Train as an LGV driver to cover driver absence
- Wear and maintain safety PPE at all times and follow the Council's safe working practice
- Share work knowledge with colleagues and new recruits
