We're seeking a trustee experienced in community fundraising and engagement, who shares our passion for maritime heritage, and can build relationships and communicate confidently with a wide range of audiences to inspire and grow both our existing and new supporters.
As a trustee with particular expertise in fundraising, you can help us to rebuild our cash reserves to pre‑pandemic levels, so we can continue to fund future maintenance needs, including major repairs and ongoing conservation. You'll also have an essential role in helping to shape the Trust’s direction and governance, support long‑term planning for preservation, learning and community engagement, and work with a committed board and crew of volunteers to keep a historic ship alive for future generations.
What are we looking for?

- Highly organised, collaborative and motivated, with the ability to inspire and grow our existing and new supporters.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a proactive and supportive Board of Trustees, contributing ideas, enthusiasm and practical support to help achieve the Trust’s charitable objectives.
We are looking for someone who:
- Can take an active approach to exploring and managing fundraising events.
- Can devise and help organise fundraising campaigns.
- Can identify fundraising opportunities by researching potential funders.
- Can assist the Board of Trustees with applications.
- Has excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
- Has IT knowledge/experience – Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint), Mailchimp, databases, Survey Monkey, social media platforms.
- Is a proactive team player.

- Communication and interpersonal skills: Experienced in maintaining relationships and working with diverse groups of people.
- Persuasion and influence: Experienced in persuading, influencing and motivating others. Has previously built professional relationships with donors, volunteers and the community. Can prepare and deliver compelling presentations.
- Creativity and Problem Solving: Experienced in developing fundraising ideas and solving problems with limited resources.
- Organisation and Planning: Experienced in planning and managing projects to meet deadlines and financial targets. Able to be persistent and handle setbacks.
- Technical Skills: Can demonstrate good computer skills and knowledge of social platforms. Good attention to detail, especially in administration and record keeping.
- Teamwork: Can demonstrate your capacity to collaborate with other Trustees, volunteers and staff effectively.
What will you be doing?
As a trustee, you'll have an essential role in contributing to the continued operation of The Matthew of Bristol. Since the COVID‑19 pandemic, our financial reserves have depleted. These reserves, once used to buffer against maintenance and revenue cycles, have now reached critically low levels. For this reason, we're looking for a trustee with fundraising experience who can help us to build back our reserves so that we can continue to maintain The Matthew for future generations.
