All secondary schools within Oxfordshire aim to have a named NHS School Health Nurse who is based in the school. The School Health Nurse service offers young people evidence-based preventative health care. Improving young people’s emotional and physical health can improve their wellbeing and life chances. The School Health Nurse will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral support staff to provide support and assistance to students and aid them to make healthy lifestyle choices and reach their full potential.
Young people can access the school health nurse during the morning breaks and lunch breaks when the school nurse is in school. The dates are on the door and available to the pastoral office.
The aim of the School Health Nurse is to offer evidence-based preventative health care for Children and Young People. We strive to improve young people’s health and wellbeing and their life chances. I will work with teaching and student support staff at encouraging students to be both physically and emotionally healthy in order to make informed healthy lifestyle choices and reach their full potential.
Someone to talk to confidentially to address issues concerning emotional health and wellbeing, physical health, sexual health, and social health. School Nurses provide public health interventions to include:
- 1:1 with students for support and strategies with emotional health and wellbeing.
- Healthy lifestyle choices (keeping safe, smoking cessation, substance misuse advice).
- Refer and signpost to specialist services as needed.
- Provide contraception, pregnancy testing, and sexual health screening.
- If we cannot help, we will find someone who can.
Young people can pop into the School Nurse office at drop-ins (alone or with a friend). Speak to your tutor or student support to help with referral. Self-refer by drop-in or using phone number to text.
The School Nursing service is confidential. This means we can discuss personal information with young people in confidence and will not discuss it with anyone else without their permission. However, if there are any safeguarding concerns, we would pass on any information that we feel is needed to protect a young person or someone else from serious harm. Whenever possible, this would be discussed with the young person first.
