The Department of Natural Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest in the University, attracting large numbers of students on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Department resides within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and benefits from spacious, modern and well-equipped teaching and research facilities. The post is a permanent full-time position.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Skills Coach who is committed to providing excellent support and guidance for Bio/ Chemical Laboratory Science apprentices. The successful candidate will work closely with the apprenticeship unit and academic colleagues.

As a Skills Coach, you will typically:

  • Act as an important bridge between the university setting and the workplace, attending employer forum events/contributing to mentor events and workshops.
  • Conduct reviews with apprentices and their line managers both in person in the workplace and online, building productive relationships with both apprentice and employer and identifying any emerging issues at an early stage.
  • Coach apprentices in developing the skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship standard.
  • Lead Skills Workshops, support and prepare the apprentice for the End Point Assessment.
  • Liaise with academic teams and support students with their assignments, in particular the workplace projects.

Qualifications

  • Experience of teaching and/or working with students, apprentices or trainees; ability to communicate with both industry professionals and apprentices.
  • Good degree in Bio Sciences, Chemistry or a related scientific discipline, scientific research or an industry-based laboratory background, with demonstrable knowledge of Bio/Chem/Lab Science.
  • Role normally involves travel to employers; a clean driving licence would be desirable, or a willingness to travel by public transport.
