As part of this evolution, the Estates & Facilities Directorate is strengthening the specialist expertise that underpins the performance and resilience of our mechanical infrastructure. We are now seeking a skilled and proactive Mechanical Engineer to help us maintain, optimise and future-proof our mechanical systems across a complex and diverse campus environment.
As a Mechanical Engineer within the Estates Operations team, you will provide professional, technical and operational expertise in the maintenance, repair, management and optimisation of the University’s mechanical systems and infrastructure. You will:
- Carry out inspection, testing, maintenance and performance optimisation of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression and related plant.
- Diagnose mechanical faults, identify root causes and deliver effective repairs to ensure continuity of service.
- Contribute to the design, planning, installation and commissioning of mechanical systems for new builds, upgrades and refurbishment projects.
- Maintain and update technical mechanical standards, statutory records and asset management information across all relevant engineering plant.
- Ensure compliance with mechanical safety legislation, including completing risk assessments and issuing permits to work.
- Monitor and improve system efficiency, supporting the University’s sustainability ambitions through energy-efficient technologies and best practice.
- Work collaboratively with Building Surveyors, Electrical Engineers and project teams to ensure integrated system performance and successful project outcomes.
- Develop and deliver preventive maintenance schedules that reduce downtime, support longevity and improve operational reliability.
- Manage contractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance with safety, quality and technical standards.
- Support emergency response activity for mechanical system failures, contributing to a safe and resilient campus.
This is a varied and hands-on engineering role with opportunities to influence both day-to-day operations and long-term system development. We are looking for a motivated Mechanical Engineer with strong technical capability and a collaborative approach. You will ideally have:
- A relevant degree or equivalent qualification/experience in mechanical engineering.
- A recognised professional qualification (e.g. CEng or equivalent) or be progressing toward this.
- Experience in mechanical engineering within an estates, facilities or building services context.
- Strong understanding of HVAC, plumbing, fire safety systems and other mechanical infrastructure.
- Experience working with energy-efficient systems, sustainable technologies and optimised system performance.
- Competence in system testing, certification and safe-working procedures.
- Ability to read and prepare mechanical engineering drawings and use relevant software (e.g., AutoCAD).
- Strong communication skills, able to explain technical information to non-specialists.
- A commitment to continual professional development and keeping up to date with industry standards.
