An exciting opportunity to help shape the next chapter of The Malling School. The Malling School is seeking an exceptional senior leader to join our Senior Leadership Team as Deputy Headteacher - Quality of Education. This is a significant and exciting leadership opportunity for an ambitious, thoughtful and highly effective school leader who wants to make a genuine whole-school difference.

At The Malling School, our ambition is to provide an ambitious and inclusive education where every student can achieve their potential, develop confidence and character, and leave us ready for a happy, successful and fulfilling life. We believe in high expectations and high support. Academic success matters enormously, but education is about more than examination results. We want our students to become confident, articulate, resilient and independent young people who feel that they belong, understand their strengths and are ambitious about their futures. We are committed to inclusion, strong relationships and continually improving the quality of education we provide. We are also a school that wants to keep learning and developing - retaining what works well while being prepared to think differently when there is a better way.

Working closely with the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team, the successful candidate will play a central role in shaping and delivering the next stage of our development.

The role includes:

  • Whole-school improvement, standards and self-evaluation
  • Strategic oversight of curriculum, assessment and outcomes
  • Developing Digital Strategy, including the purposeful and responsible use of AI
  • Workforce planning, teacher recruitment and deployment
  • MIS, data and organisational intelligence
  • Strategic curriculum modelling, staffing and timetable development
  • Leadership and development of designated senior, middle and subject leaders

The successful candidate will also deputise for the Headteacher when required and contribute fully to the wider strategic leadership of the school.

Digital innovation and the future of education

One particularly exciting aspect of the role will be the opportunity to lead the next phase of our whole-school Digital Strategy. We want to think intelligently about how technology can improve learning, strengthen assessment and decision-making, reduce unnecessary workload, improve organisational effectiveness and ensure our students develop the digital confidence they will need for their future. We are not interested in technology for its own sake. We are looking for a leader who can identify where digital innovation can genuinely make things better and then lead thoughtful and sustainable change.

Who are we looking for?

You may already be an experienced Deputy Headteacher, or you may be a highly successful Assistant Headteacher ready to take the next significant step in your leadership career. More important than your current job title will be your impact, values and potential. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a strong track record of improving provision and outcomes and who understands how excellent curriculum, teaching, assessment and leadership come together to create a successful school.

You will be someone who:

  • Thinks strategically but understands the importance of excellent implementation
  • Uses evidence and data intelligently without losing sight of the individual students behind it
  • Has successfully led significant whole-school improvement
  • Can support, challenge and develop other leaders
  • Understands the relationship between curriculum, staffing, timetable and resources
  • Is excited by the potential of digital technology and AI while understanding the importance of safe, ethical and purposeful implementation
  • Communicates exceptionally well and builds strong professional relationships
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, integrity, emotional intelligence and high expectations

Above all, we want a Deputy Headteacher who is ambitious for our students and our staff and who wants to play a major part in the continued development of The Malling School.

Why The Malling School?

This is an opportunity to join a school with clear ambition for its future and a leadership structure designed to develop genuine ownership at every level. The Malling School is a standalone school and is not part of a multi-academy trust. This gives our senior leaders a distinctive opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of the school and to see their ideas translate directly into practice. Decisions about our curriculum, staffing, resources and improvement priorities are made in the interests of our school and our community, with senior leaders working closely with the Headteacher and governing body to determine what comes next. For the right candidate, this offers both significant professional autonomy and genuine responsibility. You will not simply be implementing a strategy developed elsewhere; you will be part of the team that creates it.

Our approach is based on collaboration, professional trust and continuous improvement. We want senior leaders who develop others rather than simply doing things for them, who are curious about what works and who are prepared to challenge existing practice when there is a better way. Our school improvement priorities reflect what matters to us: excellent teaching and curriculum; early identification and intervention; inclusion and belonging; literacy and communication; character and future readiness; staff development and wellbeing; and digital innovation.

The successful candidate will join an established Senior Leadership Team with clearly defined areas of strategic responsibility. As Deputy Headteacher, you will have the opportunity to work across those areas, connect the different strands of school improvement and help ensure that our strategy translates into meaningful impact in classrooms and in the experiences and outcomes of our students. For someone aspiring to headship in the future, the breadth of this role will also provide significant experience of whole-school strategic leadership.

Interviews will take place on 19th and 20th October 2026. The Malling School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and pre-employment checks.
