JOB OVERVIEW
This is an excellent opportunity for a Production Shift Manager who has a strong background in manufacturing, people leadership and continuous improvement. Working as the Production Shift Manager you will lead semi-autonomous operator teams on shift, helping to deliver safety, quality, efficiency, waste, housekeeping and hygiene objectives across your production area. As the Production Shift Manager you will make operational decisions in a fast-paced factory environment, manage incidents professionally, support improvement activity and coach teams to achieve high standards of performance.
DUTIES
- Lead Operator Teams: Provide day-to-day line management, coaching, guidance and support for semi-autonomous operator teams on shift
- Manage Safety Standards: Complete safety actions, carry out audits, manage safety incidents and support investigations where required
- Support Quality Performance: Drive quality standards, validate checks, follow up quality actions and manage quality incidents professionally
- Coordinate Shift Operations: Make key operational decisions, coordinate factory activity and adapt plans where needed to maintain production performance
- Enforce Site Standards: Ensure teams follow expected standards for behaviour, safety, quality, breaks, processes, housekeeping and hygiene
- Manage Performance: Support appraisals, absence management, employee relations, development planning and performance conversations
- Communicate Disruption: Provide clear updates on operational changes, absence, material shortages, downtime and production disruption
- Deliver Effective Handovers: Ensure accurate, detailed and professional handovers between shift managers and operational teams
- Support Continuous Improvement: Identify losses, communicate improvement opportunities and support initiatives to reduce waste, cost and inefficiency
- Coordinate Training Activity: Work with the site training team to support training plans, scheduling and day-to-day training delivery
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
- Strong background in manufacturing, production or factory operations
- Strong understanding of end-to-end manufacturing processes
- Knowledge of safety and environmental legislation, factory standards, company policy, systems and working practices
- Proven people leadership skills with experience leading teams in a manufacturing environment
- Experience of supporting improvement projects and managing change with teams
- Strong continuous improvement knowledge, including tools used to identify and reduce time, cost and waste losses
- Excellent organisation, communication and decision-making skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and prioritise operational activity in real time
- Ability to drive a strong safety culture and support high standards of quality and performance
- Good reading, writing, numeracy and communication skills to support data recording, machine performance analysis and teamwork
- Curious about self-development and motivated to progress into senior people leadership or technical roles in manufacturing
DESIRABLE
- Background in shop floor roles
- Reasonable mechanical skills to help address day-to-day operational issues
