Overall Purpose of the Role

The purpose of this role is to support the Team Lead / Campus Dean in delivering a high‑quality student learning experience while developing the skills and knowledge required for future leadership. The Trainee Team Lead will gain exposure to academic team coordination, course delivery, and administrative duties, with a strong emphasis on academic and student support. This role offers a structured pathway to grow into a full Team Lead role through guided training, mentoring, and hands‑on experience.

Principle Duties

  • Support the Team Lead / Campus Dean with day‑to‑day academic coordination and operations.
  • Shadow and assist with academic leadership tasks, including time‑tabling, lecturer allocation, cover arrangements, and quality assurance.
  • Support Course Coordinators and Lecturers with class delivery, materials, assessments, and teaching standards.
  • Deliver supervised teaching across foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, development, and academic support initiatives.
  • Monitor student attendance, progress, and achievement, maintaining accurate academic records.
  • Identify and support at‑risk students in collaboration with academic and student support teams.
  • Provide academic and pastoral support through tutorials, office hours, and PAT supervision.
  • Assist with marking and provide timely, constructive feedback inline with academic guidelines.
  • Gather staff and student feedback to support continuous improvement and student success.
  • Participate in academic meetings, events, induction activities, and campus‑wide initiatives.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, mentoring, and training to prepare for future leadership roles.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • PGCert in Teaching & Learning (or equivalent) or commitment to completion.
  • Experience delivering teaching in higher education and supporting student learning.
  • Experience in module leadership or supporting module coordination.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple academic priorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student support, engagement, and academic quality.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with academic and professional service teams.

Desirable

  • PhD in a relevant subject area.
  • Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
  • Experience in an academic leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience contributing to quality assurance, curriculum development, or academic enhancement activities.
  • Evidence of involvement in student retention, progression, or engagement initiatives.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring colleagues in an academic setting.
  • Familiarity within institutional policies relating to academic quality, student welfare, GDPR, and equality.
  • Demonstrated readiness or aspiration to progress into a formal academic leadership role.
