Research Officer in Inequality and Mobility

Salary: ÂŁ43,277 to ÂŁ51,714 pa inclusive with potential to progress to ÂŁ55,497 pa inclusive of London allowance.

Funding is available to support this position until January 2028.

The International Inequalities Institute (III) at LSE brings together experts from many LSE departments and centres to lead critical and cutting‑edge research to understand why inequalities are escalating in numerous arenas across the world, and to develop critical tools to address these challenges.

We are seeking to recruit a Research Officer (post‑doctoral researcher) for a 24‑month period to conduct original research on topics related to inequality, intergenerational mobility, and inequality of opportunity. The postholder will be based in the “Opportunity, Mobility, and the Intergenerational Transmission of Inequality” Research Programme and will contribute to the intellectual life of the School through conducting and publishing outstanding quality research on these topics.

The postholder will also be expected to contribute to the further development of a database of Global Estimates of Opportunity and Mobility, including its maintenance, expansion, and documentation, and to use it for research purposes.

Qualifications

  • A completed PhD (or close to completing a PhD by the post start date) in economics or another social science area relevant for the successful conduct of research on inequality and/or mobility. If the PhD is not completed by the job start date, a certificate stating that the defence will take place by the end of 2026 will be needed.
  • Proven expertise and research interests focused on the measurement, causes and consequences of inequality of opportunity and/or intergenerational mobility.
  • Evidence of the capacity to prepare publications of high academic standard.
