Overview

As Waste & Contracts Manager, you will oversee high-value environmental services contracts and drive continuous improvement in waste collection, street cleansing and tree maintenance. You’ll act as the client lead, ensuring quality outcomes and value for money while shaping strategic projects to promote waste reduction and recycling. You will lead a team, manage performance and budget, and liaise with contractors, councillors and senior officers to deliver measurable impact. This role offers a chance to influence Havering’s public realm and sustainability agenda.

Responsibilities

  • Procuring and managing high-value external contracts delivering environmental services
  • Acting as specialist client for contract management to ensure quality and continuous improvement
  • Overseeing services including waste collection, street cleansing and tree maintenance (annual value > £13m)
  • Planning and directing development of strategic projects and strategies for these services
  • Promoting waste reduction and increased recycling
  • Managing a team of officers with performance management and development responsibilities

Key requirements

  • Experience procuring and managing high-value external contracts in environmental services
  • Extensive waste management operations, strategy and communications experience
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with contractors, customers, councillors and senior officers
  • Keen attention to detail and drive for performance
  • Proven leadership and management of staff and resources; strong financial planning and budget control
  • IT literate with MS Office and CRM systems; ability to analyse and explain complex datasets
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
