We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate and motivated Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly and supportive GP practice.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team committed to providing high-quality patient care.
The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Practice Nurses and GPs to deliver a range of clinical services, health promotion activities and patient care within a busy primary care environment.
Previous experience working within a GP surgery or primary care setting is desirable, although applicants with relevant healthcare experience and a willingness to develop new skills are encouraged to apply.
Main duties of the job
The Healthcare Assistant will provide high-quality, patient-centred care, supporting the clinical team in delivering safe and effective services.
Duties include undertaking NHS Health Checks, new patient health checks, recording observations (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight and BMI), performing ECGs, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, wound care, simple dressings, and the removal of sutures and clips where competent.
The post holder will assist with chronic disease monitoring, diabetic foot checks, vaccinations (where appropriately trained), and chaperoning patients during examinations.
The role also includes preparing and maintaining clinical rooms, cleaning and calibrating equipment, processing pathology samples, managing clinical stock, and ensuring compliance with infection prevention and control procedures.
The Healthcare Assistant will accurately maintain electronic patient records, promote healthy lifestyles, support recall programmes and clinical audits, maintain confidentiality, comply with practice policies and health and safety requirements, and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team while always working within their scope of competence.

- Clinical Duties
- Undertake NHS Health Checks.
- Measure and record blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight and BMI.

- Accurately record all clinical information within the patient\'s electronic medical record.
- Process pathology samples safely and correctly.
- Manage stock levels and order clinical supplies when required.
- Ensure clinical rooms remain well stocked and compliant with infection control standards.
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with recall programmes for chronic disease management and screening.

- Adhere to all infection prevention and control policies.
- Ensure safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
- Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Report incidents, accidents or significant events in line with practice procedures.
- Comply with all health and safety legislation and practice policies.
- Professional Responsibilities
- Work within the scope of competence and seek advice when appropriate.
- Maintain professional registration where applicable.
- Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development.
- Attend practice meetings and contribute to service improvement.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, NHS guidance and Practice policies.
- Work collaboratively with GPs, Nurses, Reception Staff, Administrators and the wider Primary Care Team.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent experience.
- Experience working within a healthcare setting.
- Previous experience working in General Practice or Primary Care.
- Experience undertaking ECGs.
- Experience carrying out NHS Health Checks.
- Knowledge of chronic disease management.
- Experience using GP clinical systems such as EMIS Web or Systm One.
- Awareness of CQC standards and infection prevention and control procedures.
- Disclosure and Barring Service Check
