We are looking for a keen, reliable and ambitious Commis Chef to join the kitchen team at The Leicester Arms Country Inn in Penshurst. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves food, wants to learn properly, and is looking to build a career in a professional kitchen. You do not need to know everything already, but you do need to have the right attitude, be organised, willing to listen, and take pride in doing things well.

About the role

As Commis Chef, you will support the senior chefs with daily preparation, service and kitchen organisation. You will learn how to work across different sections, follow recipes, prepare fresh ingredients and help deliver consistent, high quality dishes for our guests. You will be part of a busy, food-led country inn where teamwork, standards and attention to detail really matter.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the kitchen team with daily prep and mise en place.
  • Prepare ingredients, garnishes, sauces and basic dishes to the agreed standard.
  • Assist chefs during service and learn how to work different sections.
  • Follow recipes, portion sizes and presentation standards.
  • Keep your section clean, organised and ready for service.
  • Label, store and rotate food correctly.
  • Follow food safety, allergen and health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Help reduce waste and look after ingredients properly.
  • Support the kitchen porters and wider team when needed.
  • Listen, learn and take feedback positively.
  • Bring a good attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to improve every day.

  • Some kitchen experience is helpful, but attitude is more important.
