Overall purpose of role

To provide study skills tuition to disabled people and people with Specific Learning Differences (SPLD) including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in education or in the workplace. To facilitate clients to become independent learners through lifelong learning strategies. To signpost to internal and external services as appropriate.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Provide one to one study skills tuition to clients enabling them to develop independent learning strategies to compensate for their learning difference
  • To be able to adapt approach according to the changing needs of the individual learner you are supporting whilst working within the Learning Support Centre's Quality Assurance Framework
  • Deliver tuition according to The Learning Support Centre guidelines and code of conduct to ensure tuition is delivered effectively
  • A flexible approach to working hours is required. Occasional travel may also be required.
  • Complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each learner
  • Attend any relevant training or meetings and have the ability to develop existing skills
  • Attend a minimum of two Study Skills meetings each academic year
  • Contribute a minimum of two study skills resources to add to the staff portal each academic year
  • Advise other members of the team as required to support student progress and team development
  • Always be punctual
  • Manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing time sheets and ILPs accurately and promptly
  • Maintain a high standard of presentation whilst representing The Learning Support Centre
  • If you cannot make a session you must advise The Learning support Centre as soon possible, so that cover can be arranged
  • Confidentiality should be respected to agreed disclosure levels
  • Ensure that clients are happy with the support being provided, any problems must be referred to your manager immediately
  • Inform The Learning Support Centre of any problems you are having that are either work related or effect your work, we can then help you come to a satisfactory conclusion or adapt your work to support your situation
  • You will be expected to represent The Learning Support Centre in a professional and service orientated manner. This includes adhering to our stringent policies including those on confidentiality and safeguarding
  • Actively managing personal development in agreement with the Manager
  • To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required by The Learning Support Centre Ltd

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Qualifications and Training

A relevant degree or postgraduate qualification such as:

  • Autism Studies (BSc) Hons
  • Psychology including Autism
  • Counselling including Autism
  • Child psychology including Autism
  • Special Education including Autism
  • Childhood development including Autism
  • Master of Arts /Education (MA /MEd) in Education
  • (Autism or Special Educational Needs and Disability

Teaching qualification (e.g. Full PGCE/Cert Ed)

National Autistic Society (NAS) one-day face to face courses

delivered by individual attendance at an NAS organised

course or in-house by NAS tutors in:

  • Understanding Autism – 7 NAS online training modules
  • Autism and SPELL in higher education

Or approved CPD by DfE.

Essential if not studied or if does not hold a relevant postgrad qualification

Experience

  • Able to assess learner's needs and devise an appropriate Individual Learning Plan
  • Understands the needs, objectives and constraints of those in other disciplines and functions.
