How You'll Help Us Grow... The writer will be responsible for sourcing stories on the powerful City legal sector and in particular tech. They will write news and analysis based on The Lawyer’s proprietary research and other relevant data. They will work closely with the senior editorial team and will be keen to develop a strong understanding of business trends. They will have a particular focus on litigation OR corporate deals – fast-moving areas with plenty of scope for exclusives.

The tech beat involves covering tech-focused practices at major firms, in-house teams at start-up, growth businesses and venture capital providers as well as developments in legal tech and AI. The reporter will contribute to The Lawyer’s annual Growth List and the fortnightly newsletter Curve.

The role would suit an ambitious reporter – either at entry level or wishing to move up in their career – who wants the freedom to sniff out stories and cultivate industry contacts. The job involves working to daily, weekly and monthly deadlines and representing The Lawyer at industry events. Knowledge of professional services or related sectors is an advantage but not required; most of all, we want curiosity and flair, and there is plenty of on-the-job training. There’s plenty of variety: news, analysis, features, social media content production and even the chance to appear on The Lawyer’s podcast.

You’ll hone your reporting skills in order to understand and shape the news agenda. You’ll make a name for yourself in the market through insightful commentary. You’ll come up with ideas for investigative projects, using The Lawyer’s proprietary research and other data sources. You’ll lead and collaborate on team projects, from financial reporting to live blogs. You’ll contribute to The Lawyer Horizon, our daily must-read 7am analysis. You’ll be proactive and have no problem turning copy round and meeting deadlines. You’ll be a natural at networking, building relationships and confident when interviewing industry contacts. You’ll be on the phone, making and maintaining contacts and standing up leads. You’ll craft fantastic features that get people talking. You’ll be able to spot stories in data and work with the research team to create stories and insight, and be proactive in building contacts with external data providers. You’ll enjoy asking challenging questions of influential figures in the law. You’ll get involved with The Lawyer’s social media feeds, creating content for relevant platforms. You’ll work with The Lawyer’s wider team on events-based content where relevant. You’ll be happy working collaboratively and sharing information.

What We Need You To Have... Curiosity and a desire to learn. You’ll have a clear, elegant writing style that needs minimal editing. A willingness to get to know the dynamics of the legal market and read around the topic. Familiarity with producing multi-media content for website and social media. Strong accuracy in analysing trends and data. Ability to produce accurate copy within deadline. Intermediate numeracy skills in order to analyse numeric data. Familiarity with Excel. The ability to manage competing deadlines. Strong news sense. An understanding of ethics and confidentiality. A knowledge of the legal industry would be desirable but is not essential (but see curiosity, above).
