Senior Technical Adviser – Client Protection Department

The role is within the Client Protection department, responsible for the consistent, risk‑based delivery of outcomes while supporting decision making and guidance on claims case handling with the Compensation Fund team.

The Senior Technical Adviser will also contribute to strategic projects and policy development, develop organizational capability, and provide high quality technical advice and guidance on complex cases.

  • About Our Department and Team
  • Compensation Fund – deals with applications from people who have lost money due to the actions of someone we regulate.
  • Interventions and Statutory Trust – deals with the closure of a law firm under our statutory powers and the investigation of the firm’s financial records to establish ownership of money held.
  • Cost Recovery – recovers the costs of our regulatory action from those who are subject to it.
  • Technical Team – provides advice, guidance and support to the other teams.
  • What this Role Will Be Doing

As a Senior Technical Adviser, you will provide high quality technical advice and guidance to the Client Protection teams on high profile and complex cases that are often fast‑moving and evolving.

Your everyday duties will involve interpreting and applying statutory provisions and case law, making formal regulatory decisions, and providing decision‑making support to the department.

  • Make a formal regulatory decision on urgent Compensation Fund applications, reviewing caseworker reports, assessing evidence, applying rules, drafting, and recording decisions within tight deadlines.
  • Meet with caseworkers in the Statutory Trust team to discuss options for distributing money in probate matters where Executors cannot be located.
  • Provide technical advice to the Interventions Team regarding entitlement to property deeds held by the SRA following long‑term interventions.

You will also support and mentor junior members of the technical team, developing and delivering training and guidance on complex or new topics across all Client Protection teams.

  • What We’re Looking For
  • Solicitor, Barrister and/or strong regulatory experience.
  • Ability to quickly develop detailed technical knowledge of the SRA regulations and Client Protection’s work.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply public law principles of proportionality, reasonableness and rationality.
  • Track record of delivering successful outcomes on complex issues.
  • Ability to produce clear, authoritative written advice or guidance.
  • Effective communication at senior levels.
  • Line management capability.
  • Resilient and able to adapt to rapid changes in priority.
  • Pro‑active decision‑maker.
