Lakenham Surgery is currently seeking an experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive practice. Previous HCA experience in a GP Practice or hospital environment is essential. The successful applicant will need excellent interpersonal and communication skills and should be willing to upskill further as required. The role would suit a good team player who is able to provide support and help to colleagues to ensure that we provide the best possible care to our patients. The successful candidate would need to use a computer and a variety of software packages in the performance of their role. Therefore, keyboard skills along with the ability to organise and prioritise a varied workload are necessary. This is a Part-Time role (22.5 Hours per Week) working Monday, Thursday and Friday.
Main duties of the job include:
- BP monitoring
- Dressings/wound checks
- Urinalysis
- Weight Monitoring
- Providing Lifestyle Advice
- Undertaking ECGs for patients
- Performing Spirometry (if Trained or Training could be Provided)
- Specific injections covered by a PSD
- INR monitoring and the use of INR star (training will be given)
- Supporting with processing of specimens and management of clinical waste
- Ensuring sharps bins are ready for collection
- Ordering supplies as directed by the nursing & management team
- Keeping check of equipment & maintenance

Job responsibilities include:
- To undertake duties associated with 24 hour blood pressure monitoring to fitting and downloading from patient
- Carry out ECGs
- Conduct new patient health checks and NHS health checks
- Reviewing patients with Long Term Conditions to record routine measurements, offering disease management advice in accordance with the practice's clinical protocols.
- Obtaining specimens eg urine, and testing as instructed and completing appropriate laboratory forms and contacting patients to follow up results.
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses, ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
- Weight monitoring
- Routine Preventative Immunisations
- Basic wound care/leg ulcer care
- Removal of sutures
- Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Clearing and re-stocking nursing rooms
- To monitor usage of sharps bins, ensuring that rooms are adequately stocked and bins are transferred to storage for collection
- Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
- Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted, provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice
- Ordering and display of health promotional materials
- Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
- Maintain and clean equipment used by the nurses and GPs according to the practice infection control policy
- To order supplies as directed by the nursing and management team
- Undertake housekeeping duties, including general tidiness and cleanliness of clinical rooms
- Maintain accurate records
- Such other administrative or clinical duties that may be required from time to time by the Partners, Nursing Team and/or Management Team.
Person Specification:
- 5 GCSEs at Grade C (or equivalent) to include Maths and English
- Certified competency in Phlebotomy
- Completion of Care Certificate
- Previous experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant in a Primary Care or Hospital.
- Experience of working within confidentiality and Information Governance protocols.
- Clinical skills to include Blood Pressure monitoring, Phlebotomy, wound care, contributing to Long Term Condition reviews
- This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
£12.50 to £14.85 an hour according to experience.
