We are seeking an accomplished Group Commercial Director to lead and drive commercial strategy and performance across multiple operating divisions within a growing construction and engineering group. This is a pivotal leadership role with full responsibility for commercial governance, risk management, and value creation across the Group, working closely with divisional Managing Directors and senior operational teams.
Role Overview
The Group Commercial Director will provide strategic and operational commercial leadership across multiple civil engineering and construction divisions, ensuring consistent standards, strong commercial governance, and best practice in the management of complex infrastructure and construction projects. The role will be instrumental in shaping the Group's commercial strategy across heavy civils, earthworks, structures, highways, and infrastructure delivery, supporting sustainable growth, margin improvement, and long-term client relationships across public and private sector frameworks and projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for commercial performance across multiple divisions
- Develop and implement group-wide commercial strategy, policies, and governance
- Provide leadership and oversight to Divisional Commercial Directors / Managers
- Ensure effective contract management across the Group, including NEC and bespoke forms
- Oversight of budgeting, forecasting, cost control, cash flow, and margin performance
- Management of commercial risk, change control, and dispute avoidance
- Support pre-construction, bidding strategy, and commercial input to major tenders
- Act as a senior commercial interface with clients, advisors, and supply chain partners
- Mentor and develop commercial teams, driving consistency and best practice
Key Requirements
- Proven experience in a Group, Regional, or Multi-Divisional Commercial Director role
- Strong background in construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure sectors
- Expert knowledge of NEC contracts
- Demonstrated ability to operate at board and executive level
- Strong leadership, governance, and strategic decision-making capability
- Commercially astute with a track record of improving margins and managing risk
- Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or similar
- MRICS or equivalent professional qualification desirable
